Biography of George Chakiris

George Chakiris is an American actor, singer, and dancer, recognized for his numerous awards and over 50 roles in movies and television shows. Born on September 16, 1934, in Norwood, Ohio, Chakiris comes from a family of Greek immigrants. Growing up, he displayed talent in dance and vocals, and as a teenager, he began participating in film shoots. His debut in the film industry came at the age of 13 when he sang in the chorus for the movie "Song of Love" (1947) starring Katherine Hepburn. Chakiris was captivated by the world of cinema and frequently took part in films as a choir singer or a dancer in dance sequences.

As he grew older, Chakiris worked as a clerk during the day and pursued dance, acting, and vocal lessons in the evenings. In 1953, he had his first collaboration with Marilyn Monroe in the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," where he danced as part of a ballet troupe. This was followed by another project with Monroe, the film "Some Like It Hot," as well as several more movies where he danced and sang. Directors began to notice the talented young man, and he secured his first dramatic role in James Clark's film "Under Fire." Inspired to conquer Broadway, Chakiris relocated to New York in 1958. After auditioning, he was cast as Riff in Jerome Robbins' production of "West Side Story." He performed on stage for almost two years until he was invited to reprise his role as Bernardo in the television version of "West Side Story" (1961), for which Chakiris was honored with a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.

From that point on, Chakiris' star began to rise, and he received numerous invitations for film projects.
