In , Cohen was hired by Northwestern State to be the head coach of their baseball team. Over four seasons, Cohen won thirty eight games or more in , , and and his teams won the Southland Championship in and This success earned him the head coaching job at Kentucky and, from to , Cohen led the Wildcats to two 40 plus win seasons, two NCAA Regionals and an SEC Championship in (when he won the NCAA National Coach of the Year Award). His work earned him an offer to coach at his alma mater, and he accepted the job in late

Despite his success at both Northwestern State and Kentucky, Cohen’s first two seasons at Mississippi State have been extremely poor. The Bulldogs are a perennial baseball powerhouse and attended the College World Series as recently as , but they have gone and in Cohen’s two seasons and suffered abysmal and in-conference records. If the team does not improve soon, Cohen will likely be searching for a new job.
