Jaume Collet-Serra is an American film director of Spanish origin, born on March 23, 1974. He is known for directing the 2005 remake of the horror classic House of Wax and the recent film Orphan.

Early Life and Passion for Cinema

Collet-Serra was born in Sant Iscle de Vallalta, a small town in the Barcelona province of Catalonia, Spain. From a young age, he was fascinated by cinema and would frequent his local movie theater, immersing himself in different worlds. He developed a particular fondness for Westerns and World War II films.

Moving to Los Angeles and Pursuing His Dream

At the age of 18, Collet-Serra moved to Los Angeles with limited resources and basic English skills. Determined to pursue his dream, he enrolled at Columbia College and worked on small editing projects on the side. He soon mastered the Avid Editing System and began taking on paid work, supplementing his income.

Influences and Early Career

Influenced by directors such as David Fincher, Spike Jonze, and Mark Romanek, Collet-Serra decided to create a music video as his senior project instead of a short film. With limited budget and knowledge, he shot a music video for an unknown local band, which caught the attention of several record labels. Before graduating, he secured a job as a music video director with The End.

From Music Videos to Commercial Success

After directing several music videos, Collet-Serra received funding from the company to create original projects. His first significant project was a 2.5-minute film for AOL, which was unconventional and screened at that year's Cannes Film Festival. From there, his career took off as he landed advertising deals with renowned agencies like McCann-Erickson, J. Walter Thompson, BBDO, and TBWA Chiat Day, directing commercials for brands such as PlayStation, Budweiser, Mastercard, Miller-Lite, Pontiac, Smirnoff Ice, Renault, Verizon, and 7UP.
