Biography of Christopher Coppola

Christopher Coppola, an American director and producer, was born on January 25, 1962, in Los Angeles, California. His father, August Floyd Coppola, an Italian by descent, worked as a literature professor, while his mother, Joy Vogelsang, was a choreographer and dancer of German descent. Christopher began making films in his childhood, casting his brother Nicolas as the main character and making him follow his own scripts.

Early Education and Career

As a teenager, Christopher became a student of composer Carmine Coppola while he was working on the film "Apocalypse Now." He then went on to study musical composition at the University of Redlands, where he received a prestigious award from the California Arts Council for his opera "Plato's Cave" and "Contemplation" for five clarinets. Christopher later enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute to study filmmaking. During his final year of study, he presented four of his student works. He graduated from the institute in 1987.

Directorial Career

Just a year after graduating, Christopher Coppola showcased his first professional film as a director and screenwriter. It was the horror film "Dracula's Widow," starring Sylvia Kristel in the lead role. Another notable film by Christopher was the noir-style drama "Deadfall." The film featured his relatives Nicolas Cage, Talia Shire, and Marc Coppola, along with Michael Biehn, Peter Fonda, and Charlie Sheen. Christopher has directed just over a dozen films, some of which he also produced and wrote. These include the western "Gunfighter's Moon" and several episodes of the series "100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd."

Family and Personal Life

Christopher Coppola comes from a notable family with a rich artistic legacy. His father's parents, Carmine Coppola and Italia Pennino, were the founders of the renowned Coppola family in America. His paternal uncle is the famous director Francis Ford Coppola, and his aunt is Talia Shire, an actress who portrayed Adrian Balboa in the "Rocky" film series. His brothers include Marc Coppola, an actor and DJ on a New York radio station, and Nicolas Kim Coppola, known professionally as Nicolas Cage. His cousin Sofia Coppola is a screenwriter and director. Christopher's cousins Rooney Robert Schwartzman and Jason Schwartzman have focused more on music, with Jason being the drummer for the band "Phantom Planet" and Rooney being a singer in his own group.

Today, Christopher lives with his wife Adrienne Stout, and they have two children, Bailey Coppola and Dexter Augustus Coppola.
